Daisy

Daisy, the 2 year-old Dalmatian girl needs a new home.
We took over her from the dogpound of Eger. Signs of various wounds can be seen on her body, which may come from earlier dog attacks. These would explain why she behaves with dogs the way she does.
Daisy is very friendly with people: a grateful, lovely, cuddling girl who craves for love.
She pays attention to her carer and gets on very well with children, too.
Absolutely housebroken, behaves well in the flat and she signals when she needs to go out.
Loves running, sniffing and sunbathing in the garden. Doesn’t do any harm outside.
Pulls the leash a little bit. At the moment, she can’t be together with other dogs. She severly lacks social dog manners, therefore taking her to a dog school or a dog trainer is strongly suggested. Her carer began her training, which should be continued by her family-to-be. We couldn’t test her behavior towards cats so far. Travels nice in the car.
Recommended as a single dog for owners who would spend appropriate time for training her apart from giving her love. She needs long walks and sufficient physical exercise on a daily basis. Recommended for owners with a flat or a family house where she’s allowed to go inside. Daisy requires human company as she loves being around her family. We would like to find her a final home.
Vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, healthy.
Adoptable after sterilization with a completed deed of adoption.
Can be visited in Budapest upon a previously fixed appointment.

Happy Easter!

The story of Tenor

In the middle of February we received an email about three dogs, left in a garden by their owner. The local poundmaster collected two of them but he couldn’t catch Pongo, the young Dalmatian. Some helpful neighbours fostered him and tried to find him a home. By the time we managed to get in contact with them, they have already given Pongo to someone. Unfortunately his new home in Budapest didn’t suit him. Pongo was impounded by animal rescuers and he had to move again, within a week. They asked for our help. A well-meaning dog lover fostered him temporary but the number of dogs in his home reached beyond a comfortable amount.

Pongo hasn’t been to the veterinarian yet. He didn’t have any vaccinations and it was still a question whether he was microchipped or not. However, a couple of enthusiast (but less thoughtful) requisitors have already indicated their intention to adopt the dog. Therefore our organization took over Pongo immediately (beyond headcount and financial resources). That’s how Pongo moved to our fosterer, where he got rid of his commercial name (he didn’t listen to it either way). Following the improvisative concert of his first uncertain minutes, he was christened Tenor.

They took him to the veterinarian, who found out that Tenor is a completely healthy dog. He was in excellent condition and he received the necessary vaccinations and the microchip, as well. Days went by and we got to know him better. He behaved well in the flat. He was given a spot-on against ticks after his first shower. Tenor appeared to be a good-natured, friendly and absolutely housebroken dog who loves being around people.

Tenor learnt the basic commands in a short time and he adapted rapidly to his new environment and the daily routine. His uncertainty disappeared after the first morning and he stopped complaining, too. He got used to the daily 1,5-hour walks and he accepted his playpals who tought him how to swallow his dog chow at one mouthful. :)

Thereafter we began to search for the appropriate family for Tenor. As his photo gallery flared day-by-day, more and more requisitors showed interest in him. Some of them appeared to be promising and they all had Dalmatians before. Having written and talked to them we made a decision. It wasn’t so easy, one can tell.

Another veterinary exam still awaited Tenor. We didn’t see his testicles but the vets couldn’t find any scars (two vets have examined him), so we took him to an abdominal ultrasound exam just to make sure that he was neutered. The exam didn’t show testicles in his abdomine so we could avoid the surgery.

During the long-weekend in mid-March, Tenor moved to his new family. He was adopted by a pensioner couple, whose Dalmatian died recently. They have had Dalmatians before and their other elderly dog came to visit Tenor in very good condition. The mutual sympathy was clearly seen when they met. The whole family visited Tenor, who endeared himself to them.

A spacious and tidied garden, a soft bed and boiled food awaited Tenor in his new home. The owners are always at home, just like their four-legged friend, together with whom Tenor is now part of the family. The dallies bathe in love and care every day. Beside the daily walks Tenor can be close to the family in the house. When it comes to gardening outside, Tenor accompanies them happily and he really enjoys this activity.

His story is hereby told by his owners:

„The journey began a bit uneasy as we needed a little help to place Tenor in the car. He was complaining for a while since he was riven from his foster family. Now we know where his name comes from. He couldn’t stop crying and singing.

As soon as arrived home, he explored the garden within seconds then he circled the house and the courtyard, too. He didn’t forget to identify the gates. He cried a little during the first night, so we had to calm him a couple of times. Since then he has slept through the nights just like a baby. This may be due to tha fact that he spends the whole day in the garden. We can hardly call him inside and we go for long walks every day.

The boys mean everything to Tenor: he follows Dad as if he saw the Lord itself, whereas I hold the gracious title of servant responsible for catering. He and Aliz get on well with each other, though the old lady doesn’t play with him and most of the times she simply looks through Tenor. She acknowledges his spresence, but it doesn’t bother her at all.

Tenor welcomes our guests enthusiastically – he greets them with lots of kisses. He loves cuddling and he craves for love, he’s stuck on us all the time. Tenor definitely feels home by now and he indicates with barking that this place is his territory.

We are really glad that this love bomb became part of our family. Thank you!”

Let the photos speak for themselves:

Fundraising for Paca’s surgery

The story of Dani

We began to advertise Dani in May 2011 upon his owners’ own request.
Dani is a young and powerful Dalmatian male, full of energy spiced with a little stubbornness and strong will, which are typical features of this breed. His owners weren’t able to cope with his incredible energy and they were also forced by their neighbours to find a new home for Dani. They called for the help of a professional dog trainer, which was another chance to make their life better. Unfortunately they couldn’t attain radical changes in Dani’s behavior so the search for an optimal solution continued.
Shortly before Christmas we received a letter from a family interested in Dani. Letter followed letter and we agreed to get them in touch with Dani’s owners. During their visit they decided to adopt the dog. Dani spent the Christmas in his new home surrounded by his new owners. They had firm ideas how to train Dani and they began his education with lots of patience.

Here is their first letter:
“We are grateful for your help! Your organization made our family’s life truly happy with this beautiful dog. In the following I’m going to describe what happened yesterday. I hope that our letter will please you, too:
We had a pleasant journey, Dani is a clever boy, he behaved disciplined and he didn’t try to jump or bark and he didn’t throw up. We haven’t told our daughters about his arrival, because we didn’t want to beguile neither them, nor ourselves with useless expectations. We took his leash off in the garden and as we stepped into the house, our two daughters couldn’t help gasping from the joy. Dani sniffed the older girl (16 years) but he seemed to not notice the younger one (5,5 years).
Then we took him for a walk. He didn’t engage in conflict with the neighbouring dogs, he bravely went straight ahead and he listened to us. As soon as we arrived home, we fed him. He gobbled up the tinned meat within a second…
I had to leave then, but when I arrived home at 5 pm, he came to greet me when I called his name. He was pleased to see me but I didn’t let him jump on me. I allowed him to enter the house… Again he bubbled over with joy!
We’re planning to make this a habit. Dani stays outside during the day but we will let him in from 5 to 7pm when everyone is at home. This way he can be with us and enjoy our company. We often tell him „phew!”or „what are you doing?” and the „stay!” command. He registered the kitchen counter, the fridge and the cupboard as unfailing treat sources. He loves being around us, always looking for some delicious bites.
Dani accepted his place on the terrace but he jumps up the moment we open the door. Today morning he peeped through the door and waited for me to wake the others and he greeted everyone (even our smaller child!) happily. When we left for work we ushered him outside.
The morning walk has become my husband’s duty. He gets up at 5 am now, though I wasn’t able to get him out of bed before 5.30am earlier in the dog-free days of our life.

A couple of months have passed since then. We have received news about Dani recently:

“We’d be glad if others were also able to feel our pride. Not for our own glory but because there is so much sadness in this world, so many dogs end up on the streets and in shelters. Those who are blessed with the tiniest good sense, would love to give a home to every lonely dog… We all know that it’s impossible but it often breaks one’s heart to see the situation…
Dani and us are happy to say that we’ve had luck. We adopted the young gentleman in December 2011 and we celebrated his 4th birthday on 8th March 2012. We didn’t prepare a cake for him.
We can say now that after the difficulties of the winter season, sun has finally come out. Most of the times the door is open (!). Dani have brought lots of happiness into our lives. He’s allowed to enter the house (the kitchen is the border), we all give him a nice word, stroke him and tap on his nose when he wants to put his big head on the counter or the dining table.
After a long time Dani finally gets along with our younger daughter, as well, whom he somehow didn’t manage to notice until now. Thanks to the open door, Dani steps into the house just as often as we go out in the garden, so they had the chance to pal. He has never ever growled to our little girl, but it made Viki sad to see how much Dani adores us, while he simply passed by her.
We didn’t have to do a lot to amend this problem: we put a bag of yummy biscuits into the child’s hands, she climbed up onto the top of the jungle gym and she happily ordered Dani to sit, down and ask. Of course all his attention turned towards Viki since he couldn’t climb after her.
Due to the warm weather, Dani eats once a day. He has already lost some weight and his figure looks finer and finer. Naturally, he would gobble up all the treats of the world and he could easily dine four times a day, but he is allowed to be in the kitchen during the weekend lunch (!). We only need to say „sit” and he is able to wait (well, not the most patiently), until we finish, since he knows very well that we will surely give him some yummy bites. (Feeding the dog at the table is strictly forbidden!!)
We travelled to Domonyvölgy (close to Gödöllő) for the long weekend and we let him wander freely in the woods. Ticks avoided him and he got sooo lost in the countless interesting things he found on my mother-in-law’s plot that he forgot to take a rest during the day. We arrived home in the evening, gave him his dinner, after which he nestled up in his place and dug his nose out only the next morning.
He got used to travelling in the car and my daughters enjoyed the trip just as much as he did. A young Westie accompanied us all day long. The silly terrier provoked Dani sometimes but our four-legged friend looked down on the little ratbag with sorrow in his eyes, just like a real gentleman. He let him drink from his water bowl but he did warn the dog to stay away from his food bowl. His self-assertion hit the target.
So, that is how we live. Dani has become a lot calmer in the past months. He is not so nervous, not so wound up and he lets me embrace him, which he didn’t tolerate earlier. Not even from me, although I cowered to be level with him.

Please, put a symbolic „tick” beside Dani’s name. I believe and I feel that we were meant for each other and my family feels the same, too. We get on very well with each other even if there are (and there will be) misunderstandings and trespasses. We became attached to each other and we have also accepted the others’s whims. God only knows, we all have lots of them.”

Candy and Captain’s new home (part 2)

Part II.
Perdita_cs was sterilized a few days after the first meeting. She couldn’t spend her recovery in the … hutch in the freezing cold so our organization took her over from the veterinarian. Her new family travelled to Budapest the second time. Braving the elements of the hard winter, they drived 120 km to bring Perdita home.

Here’s their letter describing the first days’ experiences.
’Perdita was named Kendi after the English word for candy. Luckily, the surgery didn’t worn her out physically, the cone collar doesn’t bother her at all. I took it off from her neck once and I followed her with attention while she sniffed each and every corner she wasn’t able to reach wearing the cone collar. She wasn’t interested in her wound and surprisingly she didn’t care for it at all. She let us put the collar on her without any force.
She didn’t get on well with our dogs so far. They rarely meet but when they do Kendi acts agressively but we are sure that time and attitude will solve this. I do hope because as soon as she is over the recovery she will spend most of her time in the garden, not in the house… and not in the bed, as she does now.
Currently we sleep in the children’s room, she sleeps by my side on the bed. Otherwise she won’t let our family sleep. She clungs to us all the time and if she has to leave us for a moment, she whistles unwaveringly.
Kapitány (aka Pongo) is a very grateful dog, he’s no trouble. He already guards the house and his relationship with our smaller dogs is getting better. They run about the garden together and they bark at the same time. I even saw them sleeping side-by-side once.
Kendi and Kapitány didn’t act so happy when they met each other, they simply took notice of the other’s presence. We found this a little bit strange but it made us sure that they wouldn’t harm each other.
It is obvious that these dogs crave for love more than anything else. Kapitány asks for being stroked in his humble way, while Kendi demands it a bit pushily. It’s impossible not to share our love with them though it would be nice if we could switch Kendi off sometimes. But we all know that the worst dog is the loveliest of them all.

Patch

Paca, the 6 year-old purebred Dalmatian male needs a sweet home!

His owner moved abroad and he left Paca at his house. The renters fed him but they had no time to deal with him. Paca spent his days in his smaller kennel without physical exercise and outer stimuli. We took over him in March 2012 before he could have been euthanised. We placed him in a foster home in Kiskőrös, where he can move freely in a bigger yard and he is allowed to meet other dogs.
Paca is a special dog as he was born deaf. He understands hand signs and he remembers these after years of no practice. He sits down, goes to his place and gives hiw paw. He lived closed in a kennel for years therefore he is relatively distrustful with new stimuli. When something unusual happens he tends to hide in his snug and it is quite hard to make him come out of it. Due to the lack of physical exercise he has a weak musculature and there are several pressure sores on his body from lying too long. These need to be treated.
Paca is reserved dog, distrustful with strangers in the beginning. Over the past weeks he built up strong bond with his carer, at the moment he is the only one Paca trusts. He needs more time to ease up with people. Otherwise he is friendly and longs for human company. Due to his deafness he pays a lot more attention to people and uses his nose very well. Loves running and playing with a ball. Has no problem travelling by car.
It might be helpful if Paca had a dog friend to whom he can pay attention during the walks and other programs.
Recommended as a second dog to a female company or as a single dog.
Not recommended for families with children.
Paca needs an assertive and impatient owner who leaves him enough time to open up and gives him security and stability in his life.
Paca has a pedigree, vaccinations and a microchip. Adoptable after castration.

News of Monty & Lisa

Lisa was spayed on the 2nd of March. She coped with the surgery very well and she is feeling great now. She just can’t wait to have some fun, though she’s not allowed to run around the garden and play with Monty yet. Lisa is convalescing in her foster home and her keeper has already indicated his intention to adopt her.

Lisa’s surgery was supported by the Dalmatiner in not Österreich. We are truly thankful for their generous help!

The story of Lilly

This Dalmatian lady was found walking on the road near Eger in January 2012. She was mere skin and bone. She was placed in a cold hutch for 1,5 weeks, which wasn’t the best solution. The Vidám Mancsok Állatvédő Egyesület (Happy Paws Animal Rescue Association) took over her. They didn’t have a free place but they weren’t able to leave her there in the freezing winter. The Dally was given a refreshing shower and the necessary vaccinations before she was taken to the Hungarian Dalmatian Rescue. Our Austrian partners told us that someone became interested in her, so we named her Heidi.

Heidi visited the veterianian and she received a microchip and a passport, too. The thorough abdominal ultra sound examination showed that she was in heat at the moment.
A few days later we gave Heidi to our Austrian collegues and they spayed her after heat. Her new family visited her several times during her recovery and they got on very well with each other. In the meantime Heidi was christened Lilly. She moved to her new sweet home at the end of February, where she received two small friends, as well. They take superb long walks together in the surrounding woods and enjoy the warmth of their loving home.
Lilly sent us a couple of photos so that we can see her story in pictures, too. Check out her album here:

Help us to save dals

The Hungarian Dalmatian Rescue is a young association. In the past two months we have taken over 7 Dalmatians!

The medical treatments and secure fostering of the previous 6 dogs (Monty, Lisa, Lilly (Heidi), Perdita_cs, Pongo_cs and Polly) have consumed our scarce financial reserves.
We do not have the sources to care of Tenor and Paca (both need vaccinations, microchip, health check and more for Paca: dog pension, castration)!
If you have the possibility to support our association, even with a few Euros, please be so kind to donate us.

A csepeli dalmaták története

Candy and Captain’s new home (part 1)

Part I.

At the beginning of February 2012, a family interested in two Dalmatians travelled to Budapest. It was a snowy Saturday, the wind was blowing hard but the bad weather didn’t frigthen them away. They arrived from the Lake Balaton to visit the two dogs. A young married couple introduced themselves to us; the grandparents took care of their kids while they were working their way up on the slippery road to meet Perdita and Pongo.
Pongo climbed out chattering of his worn-out board house. We had to lure him for a while in the cold. The owner let Perdita out of the cage, too. She became sooo happy to greet the newcomers. Both Dals acted very friendly with us. They were awfully fat and dirty and they were almost freezing in the cold, especially Pongo. He wanted to be stroked, too, though he prefered to ensconce himself into his house in order to find a warm place. But it offered no shelter at all.
The Dalmatians literally looked like as if they were kept in hutches. Perdita was in a better condition than the others. We could see various wounds on Pongo’s body and fur was missing on his nose, legs and tale. However, the sight of the dogs didn’t deter the future-owners. They were experienced Dalmatian-owners and they had two smaller dogs at home, now. Looking into the dogs’s love-hungry eyes, they immediately discovered what they were searching for: two new members of their family.
Pongo and Perdita sensed that their savers had finally arrived and they were fawning upon them continuously. The sympathy was undoubtedly mutual between them, as the pictures show.
We fixed this appointment to see whether they would get on well with each other, but the two Dalmatians endeared themselves to the couple so much that they decided to adopt the dogs. They live in a nice house with a garden and the dogs are treated as members of the family. They are allowed to enter the house and the head of the family works at home so the four-legged pals are never left alone.
Considering the dogs’ condition and the circumstances of their keeping we agreed that they would take Pongo home (he was vaccinated and neutered) and Perdita would move to her new home after the sterilization was done. It was probably a better idea to introduce one dog at a time to their current small-sized dogs, just to make Pongo’s conformity smoother. We believed that they would get on well with each other since the dogs have lived with Dalmatians before so it wouldn’t be a shock to them to get two big friends again. Doing things step-by-step is always a good option.
The family decided to adopt two Dalmatians, so it was a great advantage that Pongo and Perdita have known each other for years, though they lived in separate cages.

Pongo_cs ’wagged farewell’ to his previous owners and he climbed into the car happily. He was joyfully looking forward to what was awaiting him in his brand new life.

The smaller dogs accepted Pongo, who adapted to his new home within seconds. The children fell in love with him at first sight and they named him Kapitány (Captain). The three dogs consumed their dinner together on the first evening. As the days passed by the two small dogs decided to share their bed with their new friend.
Kapitány, the calm Dalmatian Gentleman is incredibly grateful for the love and care he receives each and every day.

Polly news

The Austrian Dalmatian Rescue took over Polly from us. At first they visited the veterinarian since the surgery couldn’t wait. She was suffering from hernia, which was removed and she was sterilized at the same time. Polly is doing fine now and she is convalescing in her foster home. She often gives that cute Dalmatian smile to her tender when her yummy meat&rice dinner is being prepared. :)
Polly loves to be close to people, she raves for love and she has become a real couch dog, who does deserve attention and care.
We are grateful for the help that arrived from the Dalmatiner in Not Österreich!

News about Kitty

Kitty, the Dalmatian lady rescued from the animal shelter of Debrecen, spent long months in foster homes in the course of 2011. As it turned out, it was worth waiting for her new owners, since she found a loving home near Vienna. She is now the apple of the eye of a nice Austrian veterinarian and her family.
Kitty was sterilized soon after her adoption and her training began after her recovery. Today, she is trained by one of the best Viennese dog trainers. Her family works a lot with her, too, so it’s not surprising that Kitty walks fine off the leash, even in the woods. She is an obedient, happy girl and she feels great in her sweet home. :)
